We offer an engaging environment that enablesstudents pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees to sustainintellectual and personal growth.Position SummaryThe American Studies Program at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia founded in 1693 that is located on lands originally inhabited by ancestors of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway), Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Mattaponi, Monacan, Nansemond, Nottoway, Pamunkey, Patawomeck, Upper Mattaponi, and Rappahannock tribes, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in visual culture(s). The position is a joint appointment in the American Studies Program (75%) and a department to be determined based on the successful candidate's disciplinary expertise (25%). Appointment will begin August 10, 2024.The American Studies Program seeks to expand our areas of expertise by hiring a colleague who engages the ways in which visual representations frame our understanding of the social world and the making of intersectional identities and differences. This expertise might include research on, among other areas, the LatinX, Latina/o, and/or Ibero-American diaspora, Indigeneity in the Americas, and/or Afro-Caribbean identities. Specific visual culture specializations might include, among others, photography, screen cultures, graphic arts, painting, and vernacular art, including their production and circulation. Exceptional applicants from other areas of visual culture will be considered.We seek a colleague with interdisciplinary research and teaching from fields including but not limited to American Studies, Art History, Anthropology, Design, Digital Humanities, Ethnic Studies, Film and Screen Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, History, Indigenous Studies, LGBTQ Studies, LatinX, Latina/o Studies, New Media, Religious Studies, or Sociology.Duties include research, teaching, and service to the American Studies Program and the University. The successful applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body. They will also be expected to mentor Master's and Ph.D. students.Teaching expectation is two courses per semester. Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling courses in visual culture and other lecture and seminar-style courses in the American Studies Program and their home unit.Required QualificationsApplicants must hold a Ph.D. in visual culture or a related field at the time the appointment begins (August 10, 2024).Preferred QualificationsPrevious experience in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. Evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar.
