An influential role has opened in the Technology & Performance (T&P) Directorate of MBDA Italy.
The position reports hierarchically to the Innovation and Future Technologies (IFT) Directorate with a contribution to the Internal Research and Development (IRAD) Directorate. Both Directorates sit within the Technology & Performance (T&P) Directorate of MBDA.
T&P Missions:
• Prepare the future of MBDA
• Drive the transformation and improvement initiatives within MBDA
• Ensure Operational Excellence at MBDA
IFT missions:
• To coordinate the identification of external emerging technologies and drive initial evaluations of those technologies
• To manage Intellectual Property (IP) throughout MBDA
• To stimulate inventions and innovation and support innovators in MBDA through the implementation of open and entrepreneurial methods and tools
IRAD missions:
• To set the technology strategy for MBDA
• To balance the requirement for external and internal investment in developing the future products & supporting technologies
• To deliver the internal investment of the business in future products & supporting technologies
The Role:
The IFT Innovation and IP & IRAD Manager of MBDA Italy will split his/her contribution between two missions:
• Support the Innovation and Future Technology (IFT) processes in Italy creating awareness, stimulating innovation, helping improving our innovation initiatives and more specifically support the Group Head of IP and Technology Partnerships, leading IP Management activities in MBDA Italy such as:
o Develop IP awareness and support innovators regarding the protection of inventions.
o Manage and coordinate IP and report relevant IP information and status;
o Lead the organisation of the Italian IP protection committee and prepare the IP decisions (e.g. for patent filing together with external patent attorneys);
o Implement and update IP relevant processes, strategy and policy and contribute to MBDA Group IP initiatives (e.g. introduction and usage of IP tools, patent monitoring);
o Facilitate the definition of IP rules in technology partnerships (with SMEs, Universities, …).
• Support the head of Internal Research And Development (IRAD) programmes Italy in the definition, management and delivery of multi-national Internal Research and Development (IRAD) Strategic Technology Programmes. Crucial to this is interaction with senior collaborators across the company to ensure that MBDA's investments are accurately targeted and prioritised:
o Defining and owning the Product, Technology and Capability Strategic Technology Programmes (STPs) through interaction with many collaborators, that will craft the future MBDA portfolio
o Improving coherence and efficiency across the portfolio by prioritising, ensuring relevance and preventing double-accounting of effort.
o Supporting IRAD Team Project Control/Management tasks, passionate about Italian ecosystem but giving across Group where opportunity allows.
o Managing the assigned STPs performance, cost & schedule; supervising the external commitments and the creation of Task Directives and booking numbers in conjunction with finance; supporting the IRAD Workload Forecast.

Skills:
• Master's degree in STEM disciplines with a qualification in Intellectual Property/Patenting
• Knowledge of IP, Patents, Trade Marks, Trade Secrets, and related concepts.
• Knowledge of the process requested to protect an invention with all the implications of this decision.
• An ability to understand and analyse an invention to the required details to formulate recommendations on Intellectual Property protection
• An ability to communicate about complex technologies to a technical and non-technical audience.
• An ability to write and communicate clearly, concisely and attractively
• An ability to communicate in English orally and by writing, including on technical topics.
• An ability to reduce uncertainty by articulating relevant questions to be answered.
• Basic knowledge in project management.
• Appreciation of the engineering lifecycle, preferably including direct involvement of technical delivery

Desirable Experience & Knowledge (Not essential and will be part of the opportunity of the role):
• Knowledge of the Industrial Defence sector
• Knowledge of the academic and Innovation ecosystems within Italy.
• Engineering or R&D Project Management background. An understanding of TRL levels.
• Experience in collaboration with SMEs, Large Companies, Universities and Research Centres.
• Negotiation skills.
