Rather, the course assistant is a facilitator, mediator, and general support person who may serve as the bridge between the faculty and students and will contribute to the overall success of the program by providing academic personal, and logistical support to Brandeis in Siena administration, students, and faculty. Responsibilities of the program assistant include:
Attend the Pre-Program Workshop and Pre-Departure Orientation before the program begins
Travel to Siena, Italy for the duration of the summer study abroad program to support program operations
Assist with onsite orientation including by leading activities and helping participants get situated in Siena
Provide academic support to the program and Faculty Director, including but not limited to management of art supplies, classroom setup, and general assistance, but not to include teaching, evaluation, or grading of student work
Act as a community advisor in program housing for the duration of the program, including by facilitating program activities, meeting with students and mediating challenging situations, and acting as an additional emergency contact for the program
Provide tutoring support in academic coursework
Establish a leadership role within the group and encourage a position group dynamic, including by leading group-building exercises and facilitating communal cross-cultural learning
Act as a resource for students who need assistance with personal, emotional, financial, and health related issues during the program.
Verify and track student travel plans outside of the program
Facilitate activities in the local community during program free time
Complete a program report within two weeks of program completion detailing the program's successes and challenges, any student incidents, and suggestions of improvement in the program for the following year
The Course Assistant will be paid in the form of a stipend for the summer. Flight, housing, insurance, and participation in relevant program activities will also be covered during the dates of Brandeis in Siena.
